Nel 1711, quando è alla corte del Cardinale Ottoboni, Filippo Juvarra (Messina, 1678 – Madrid, 1736) pubblica, dedicandolo al suo mecenate, un libro che è la sua opera più squisitamente ornamentale, dedicata agli “Artefici”. Opera che ha stretti legami con la sua tradizione familiare di sofisticati artigiani, argentieri e che si inserisce in quel genere di pubblicistica di cui già facevano parte al tempo le opere di altri due argentieri romani, Passarini e Giovanni Giardini. Juvarra reinterpreta 50 targhe di artisti famosi dichiarate nella “Tavola degli Autori” ; modelli per gli artefici delle varie discipline perché disegnare una targa, scrive l’autore, è difficile come per un valoroso soldato esporsi in combattimento.
